Moving Your Domain

There are several options when it comes to moving your domain. You can either:-
  1. Move the whole domain over
  2. Change the nameservers
  3. Just change the 'www' section to point to our servers

1. Moving the whole domain.

What does this mean?
This will move the whole of the domain over to us - this includes:- email, web and the domain renewal responsibility.

Why should I do this?
This is often a good idea as it means that all the information and billing for your website and domain name is in one place. It means there will be one point of contact. We send reminders out when domains are up for renewal.

2. Change the nameservers.

What does this mean?
When you type in www.flinthosts.co.uk into your browser the browser needs to know where to find that website. Nameservers do that job - they tell computers who are looking for a domain where they can find it and then point them in that right direction.

Why should I do this?
If you want Flint Hosts to handle your website and email but you are happy leaving the billing of the domain with your current registrar then this option is for you. This means that we don't have any control of the renewing of the domain and so it will be down to you to make sure your domain doesn't expire.

3. Just change the 'www' section to point to our servers.

What does this mean?
This will move just the 'www' section of you domain name (known as the 'A record') over to us and leave the email where it is. You could of course do the reverse and let us host your email (known as the 'MX records') and keep the website where it is.

Why should I do this?
Sometimes companies use 3rd party specialist email providers to handle the email side of things and so when looking for a new host only want the website to be taken care of.

We would recommend moving the whole of the domain over as this makes it easier in the long run for administration and support but it really is up to you and there are good and valid reasons for doing any of the 3 above. There is no 'right' way - the choice is yours.
